Books Lately: data feminism, AI, and activism

Data Feminism by Catherine D’Ignazio, Lauren F. Klein

This was such a helpful book for me, as a data analyst. I’m always trying to be more aware of when data is missing or skewed in ways that the “universal” (white male) viewer might not notice. I was constantly looking things up and now I have a bunch of tabs open with all the things I’m thinking about or hoping to work on.

The Worlds I See by Dr. Fei-Fei Li

I enjoy any scientist’s enthusiasm and wonder around their subject and I’m glad she got into the ethics of AI, but I think it’s a bit unfortunate that that only happened in the last little section of the book. I think scientists have a social responsibility to imagine the uses of their creations by the tech billionaires because those billionaires have no sense of ethics or responsibility to anyone other than themselves and their shareholders and most politicians are no better. I know it’s hard because the technology is so cool in itself, but it’s also harming both people and the environment.

No!: The Art and Activism of Complaining by Sara Ahmed

One of those books that contains all sorts of useful information that the people who most need to read and absorb will probably ignore. Now I’ll always think of “Complaints [as] missing data”. Main takeaways: work with other people as much as possible and document everything!
